As long as your survival depends on someone else finding your life profitable, you will never really be free. :/

@hypolite Corollary: As long as your survival depends on someone else finding your life profitable, you won't really be secure either. :/

It's either broadly right or narrowly wrong. Even if you knew how to fend off for yourself in the wild, someone may force you to work for them at gunpoint.

On the other hand, my current job field is very secure right now, but what about in 10, 25, 40 years when I may still have to work? What if environmental damage makes network computing unsustainable?

@hypolite Mmm, indeed. Seems the best bet to me would be a society that did it's best to preserve the freedom and security of it's constituents. But what do I know. :P

And fosters cooperation instead of exploitation, of course, but no such society seems to be immune to an individual's power trip. Longing for greatness will trump a boring confortable baseline any day of the week.

@hypolite Maybe we should encourage such people to find other ways to be great. :/

I don't think the current society created basic competitive urges and power hunger, merely amplified and commoditized them. My 3-year old daughter learned to lie to get her way, and nobody around her taught her.

@hypolite Oh, certainly. But we can still provide morals and framework, and channel those impulses into less destructive ends. Thats the whole idea behind capitalism, after all, even if the promise is beginning to ring hollow. :/

We can provide, but we can't impose. What if someone just gets a kick out of destruction and won't accept channeling alternatives? You have to include them if your plan as well, and it becomes tricky.

@hypolite Well thats a lot easier - you wait for them to break the law and send them to jail. Not my preferred solution, but it does work. :/

@hypolite Then you need to make them stop being a legislator. In general, societies checks and balances need to be expanded and reinforced to prevent people from being able to abuse their power. It's a big job. :/

I know, everybody has to be committed to this balance, especially those involved in that balance.

@hypolite not necessarily everybody - I think it's possible for it to be fairly robust. Will take so doing though. :/

Well, take the current political landscape in the US. Journalism has been weakened by private interests who concentrate more and more publications into one fold, and independent outlets can be sued into the ground on any pretense by a miffed billionaire. This in turns enables politicians to challenge critical pieces and reject in bulk the "mainstream media", while peddling propaganda via friendly "alternative" outlets.

@hypolite Ayep. That is indeed a problem that will need to be addressed. I'm feeling optimistic, though. I think we can do it. :/

If we didn't have any such historical precedent, I'd be inclined to be hopeful, but we do, and it didn't end well for millions and millions of people. Eventually, the problem was "solved", at least for a while, but it very much was a Pyrrhic semi-victory.
