@derekcaelin the one advantage to mastodon is it's federation and ability of instances to censor according to their standards. I suppose instances, if they got large would have problems like you described but subreddits can and do manage. The moderation of Mastodon is somewhat similar.
@I_Will_Wobble Agreed. I know subreddits have mods with the power to remove content against the subreddits code of conduct.
I guess that when people are looking for their alternate social networks, they build their own, and nazis are no exception. When researching alternative social networks I found a bunch that catored heavily towards the right. Why go to Mastodon when you can build your own network and not have a challenge to spreading hateful content?
@I_Will_Wobble one of the attractions for me about Mastodon is that it seems not try and actively create a non hateful environment.
I think if Mastodon got to the scale of these other social media platforms, it would encounter a similar challenge in terms of hate speech and general nastiness. Facebook is one of the most powerful companies in the world and it doesn't have the ability to auto detect hate speech.
