I worry sometimes about the UX of Mastodon if everything that's not entirely pithy goes under a CW.

I, of course, respect the reasons why anyone would ask for one. But the more things end up under CW, the more I become trained to just reflexively open them whether it's good for me or not.

I think it would be nice if users could opt to permanently open certain CW words. Like "tech", the example that got me thinking about this.

@zigg Your comment about how you reflexively open CWs is interesting because it's the opposite for me: the more I see CWs the more likely I am to scroll past them.

@bvtsang Yeah, I'm with @zigg on this one, as I just mentioned to someone else (copy/paste ahead): I feel like I honestly read *more* toots with CWs than I do those without, because it's a time saver! "Ooooh, I like dogs! I like selfies! I feel like reading about assistive tech today! I'm in the headspace to handle being angry about homophobia!" Otherwise, I generally scroll past if it's more than a single sentence, if I'm honest.

I treat the CW as a subject line or summary. I really like your point about length: if I'm going to invest any effort into it, I want to know what it will be beforehand.

@SuzanEraslan @zigg That sounds like opening a wrapped present when you can reasonably guess its contents! So like Christmas, but more frequent!

I'm wondering whether my unwillingness to open CWs is due me not being in the headspace or having energy to read about certain topics. I do like how clicking on them is becoming a more conscious action: "yes, I will read about this heavy topic right now!" And it's in that moment that I gauge my energy meter.

(new CW: food mention) CW thoughts, Mastodon UX Show more

@bvtsang @zigg Oh, yeah, exactly-- there are definitely things I skip over almost every time, but then there are things like "food" which never bother me, and though I know the function of using a CW is to protect those with ed and other triggering food issues, it's always opening a gift for me because I love food!
