My post about the Free Music Archive going away has been my most boosted ever. So here's a reminder that the Internet Archive is not only hosting FMA's archive, but has millions of other audio files and streams available.

Click the 'More' under the 'Collection' filter on the left; there are 50 PAGES of collections to start with.

the sixth extinction

The sixth mass extinction is unfolding right now, a purely human-driven phenomenon involving the ravages of mass monoagriculture, the horrors of factory livestock farming, the wreckage left by mining and trawling, the mountains of mess left by disposable capitalist society, and the induced pressures of anthropogenic global warming. Even the fascists and plutocrats won’t be able to hide.

uspol, distressing global sociopolitical developments

it’s been quite something to see everyone in the US who couldn’t shut up about family, faith, and freedom from the early 1990s until two years ago line up to lick the boots of venal authoritarian nationalist grifters.

it’s also been quite something to watch venal authoritarian nationalist grifters openly collaborate across the very borders they intend to further reify and fortify.

weed, capital, and the state

the website for the province-run booze retailer, on the other hand, is far more consumption-friendly.

it’s worth noting that the LCBO was once far less inviting and comfortable, requiring customers to fill out forms, after which clerks would retrieve items from the back. the weird-ass privately-run beer oligopoly known as the beer store still does something similar.

they’ll make you feel bad about feeling good, but they’ll gladly take your money for it.

weed, capital, and the state

thanks to the magic of separation of powers, every province will have its own sales regime. originally, all of ontario’s sales would be handled through a state-run outlet with an online store and physical locations. the ford regime dumped the physical stores in favour of licencing private retailers, but the online store will still operate. The first text you encounter after submitting your totally-not-fake age is not particularly inviting.

weed, capital, and the state

Two days until weed becomes legal in Canada, and somehow more legally encumbered than in its current illegal state. Former cops, drug-shaming politicians, and capitalists are all rushing to get rich on the plant that they used as an excuse to harass and imprison people of colour, while ensuring those same people are locked out of the newly-legal and lucrative industry. It’s the kind of shitshow I feared would emerge.

Reading Le Guin's version of the Tao Te Ching, and in a note she says "no pessimist would say that people are able to look after themselves, be just, and prosper on their own. No anarchist can be a pessimist."

This certainly isn't revelatory, but it is a nice occasional reminder. Things hurt all the time because I care about them lolsob

unusually insightful mainstream punditry

“Once malice is embraced as a virtue, it is impossible to contain.”

It’s impossible to ignore the sheer cruelty in which adherents of authoritarian nationalist politics indulge. The marginalized people they’ve been aching to erase have tried to warn everyone about this surge of open hatred, cultivated for decades by hate radio, reactionary punditry disguised as news, and demagogues in clerical clothing.

The abyss looms.
