General request: if you post pictures, please please include alt text describing the image so that everyone, regardless of visual ability, can enjoy your toot.

Please consider asking others to do this. Optionally, reconsider boosting toots if they don't have alt text.

We all have an opportunity to help shape the culture of this place and I'd love, love, love if it were "oh, everyone posts alt text with their images because that's just what you do."

as a friendly reminder, we love CWs! use them generously! they're fun for jokes... and they keep people safe. keeping people safe is awesome.

some things that CWs love to tag: words or images that contain politics, violence, religion, lewd stuff, weapons, food, mental and physical health, weight loss/body size talk, storms, drugs, bigory, and hilarious (or not hilarious) jokes.

there's no quiz later. it's just about doing what you can to minimize harm & be welcoming to everyone. ๐Ÿด @ghost.

special thanks to @staticsafe for all his work on mastible (github.com/staticsafe/mastible). It made it SUPER easy to set up my instance and honestly I'm not sure I would have actually done it if I had to do all those steps manually

so, yay, I finally set up my own instance of ! For now I'm going to keep it just a private instance, but I'm open to opening it up for anyone I know who might want an account there too.

I'm not leaving ACP though, I love the people here and I'd like to continue to be a mod here (for as long as they'll have me :-) )

My new account is @balrogboogie

happy solstice you dorks โค

TIL that "once," "twice," and "thrice" are the only words of their kind in english. I mean, I knew that I had never heard any similar words for "four times," "five times," etc, but I just assumed they were rare, not non-existent.

my wife just read a thing that says scientists measured elephants' responses to stimulus, and the relative "same" part of their brains lit up looking at humans, as does in humans when we see puppies

There are very few instances in which a person has what they would classify as no family and they would like to elaborate. So don't ask them. Just invite them over for cookies and don't make it a thing.

Thanks! Love, an orphan.

Like, the response to, "I don't have any family," is, at max, "Oh, sorry." Not, "What do you mean?" Or asking how their relatives died or why they are not in touch with the living ones or questioning if they REALLY have NO family by asking, "Not even aunts or uncles or cousins?"

Paul boosted

Depressing but necessary holiday PSA: Don't assume everyone has "family." Some people have families they can't talk to. Some people's families are dead. Don't assume "family" is the default. And if someone says they have no family, don't press them.

ok, gotta concentrate. see you later today mastonians

So what's the latest with Android clients? The last time I looked into it, Twidere was still the only one that supports multiple accounts, and I wasn't a huge fan of how it threaded the home TLs of all my accounts together

Is there anything besides Tusky & Twidere that people are using?

it seems reasonable to me that one's response to "please don't call me [word]" ought to be "ok, i won't," and not "actually it's fine if i call you [word] because"

My Gaelic study gave me an idea for a domain name for the custom instance I've been meaning to set up. It turns out that the name is available, and it only costs $0.88
