Allowing oppressive language 'you disagree with' isn't encouraging free speech, it's encouraging the use of tools specifically designed & used to silence the speech of marginalised people.

I don't think class consciousness among the working class(es) of the United States is really at all possible until the white working class and the non-white working class have at least somewhat similar experiences so they can both be convinced that they share political and economic goals. And those shared experiences are never going to happen so long as white supremacy has such a stranglehold over economic and political outcomes in the United States.

This... never seems to have happened in the United States. And I think a large part of it has to do with white supremacy. That is, creating unity amongst working class individuals needs there to be some shared sense of experience, but thanks to the totally different experiences of white and black working class people in the United States, this unity isn't really possible.

I'm currently reading EP Thompson's magisterial "The Making of the English Working Class" and it's got me thinking about the working class in the United States. One of Thompson's points is that the working class was *made,* it didn't just happen. Actors within and outside the working class constructed it as a unified class that, despite different occupations, shared political and economic goals.
