Don't Teach Students To Use Proprietary Software!!
You Are Only Teaching Them To Be Dependent On Their Oppression!
@clarkenciel never encountered that. but i've been taught windows, the whole Google cloud suite, matlab, various proprietary web services, microsoft + apple office suites, and much, much more
@cosine it's a stats software that a lot of psych departments teach, but it requires licenses so your knowledge is basically useless once you're out of an institution
@clarkenciel (gnu/linux, libreoffice, R or anything to be honest, [this one's fair enough], libreoffice again) if you're looking for alternatives
@cosine haha I'm fine, but my partner has bemoaned it many times. R ftw
@clarkenciel oh, and photoshop, flash, macos, and iOS
@hyper then why are we teaching it?
anyway, that is a very rare occurrence. usually people are either too steeped in the popular culture to find the free software alternatives, or too stubborn to accept them with their flaws
@cosine I 100% agree, but it's a hard sell when so few free software programs take UI design seriously. Bad UI is an immediate turnoff for noobs and leads them to think the free versions of things are worse than proprietary software.
Both.
Design in general and UI design in particular is a craft, and FOSS is usually made by devs, not designers.
Caliopen took a long time to think about the design question and basically everybody was like "just show us some code".
@cosine fuck SPSS amirite?
