I was looking around for free (as in freedom) social networks and I'm happy to see #mastodon 😃
Now planning to make the (probably) first #Turkish mastodon :-)
"What defines a solidarity enterprise is the presence of unity converted into an economic force, not just the mechanical adoption of a cooperative model of organization or some other specific type of association."
The popularity of Wikipedia article about #workercoops seems to be going up a lot - last month was by far the best month since records began!
Thanks to leaps forward in web security, the advice to avoid open WiFi is out of date and not applicable to most people anymore. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/01/why-public-wi-fi-lot-safer-you-think
I also wish the environmental movement would celebrate its victories instead of being all-negative all the time.
Like, this: "Deforestation declined a whopping 70% from 2004 to 2012. It has risen modestly since then but remains at one-quarter its 2004 peak."
That's an amazing achievement! Why have I never heard about it? Why aren't we all talking more about what strategies worked so well from 2004-2012 and how to replicate them elsewhere?
Is there a way to block a user in #riot.im ? A bot is inviting me to a room. Once I reject it, it invites again.
The lack of revolutionary potential in most existing co-ops is one of the many reasons why cooperative/collective economic projects should already incorporate an inherently anarchist approach at the founding level, and options for long-term horizontal scalability via federation with politically & structurally compatible projects shouldn't be an afterthought.
Worker co-ops shouldn't be isolated. Instead, they should have the clear potential to be integral parts of a bottom-up needs-based economy.
The Mastodon GitHub repo currently has 3 open issues that could help moderators moderate better:
- Add a moderation API: let third-party devs build better tools for moderation, much like the various mobile clients. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/8580
- Add Locked account state: let mods to temporarily lock accounts (like a forum ban) without kicking the user out. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/7273
- Add public info about number of mods/instance: let people find instances with more mods/user. https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/8557
