software, Nazis.

Huh. So TIL that the suckless.org developers organized a torchlight walk at their conference in Neuremburg (last year?), and the laptop of one of the developers is named "wolfsschanze"; one of their developers posts on lobste.rs decrying "Cultural Marxism". So there's a project to avoid.

software, Nazis.

@gcupc This makes me sad, I had no idea, and I've been using some of their projects for years. :| time to write my own terminal emulator I guess!

software, Nazis.

@gcupc It is, and I use it on my work Mac! Last time I tried to build it on Linux it took way too long, but that was also on an underpowered ancient thinkpad, so maybe I should try it again

software, Nazis.

@zacanger @gcupc late to the party but im in love with kitty. its GPU ACCELLERATED. i had no idea i needed that in my life but after using it, i extremely did

re: software, Nazis.

@anna @gcupc @zacanger what does that even do

re: software, Nazis.

@xeno @gcupc @zacanger like the practical side of it is when there's a lot of scrolling like when you're compiling its hecka smooth and looks nice. it also seems to consume that much less cpu which isnt that big of a deal but seems to make everything else a bit more responsive when its vomiting output

@xeno @gcupc @zacanger going to be the next twitch millionaire by streaming a world emerge in a loop all day every day

re: software, Nazis.

@anna @zacanger @gcupc damn i wish i used terminals enough to wish they scrolled more smoothly :( i could probably check it out just for the novelty i suppose. is it also exceptionally good at images in terminal

re: software, Nazis.

@xeno @gcupc @zacanger i dont know i dont use images in it, it really needs/likes fixed width characters though as thats an important part of the acceleration working

re: software, Nazis.

@anna @zacanger @gcupc beautiful also its been too long since i stole any emotes

software, Nazis.

@gcupc do you have any sources on this? Is like to write a blog post about it

software, Nazis.

@gcupc source (only because I’ll be asked when I tell others to stop using this stuff)?

software, Nazis.

@gcupc I switched to i3 years ago (easier to configure and has a sweet status bar that includes a notification tray) and i don't use the others. I still use dmenu, which is part of dwm, even in other WMs like FVWM. Any suggestions on an alternative to that?

re: software, Nazis.

@zacanger @gcupc @ND3JR Rofi even has a dmenu compatibility flag, if you want to switch very quickly

re: software, Nazis.

@elomatreb @gcupc @zacanger I probably should have deleted my toot because shortly after I tooted I remembered having used Rofi on my Ubuntu workstation at my last job. To my pleasant surprise it's in NetBSD's pkgsrc and I've already installed it and removed dmenu.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway, and at least others with the same question can now find the answer.

software, Nazis.

@zacanger @ND3JR @gcupc thanks, i didn't realize dmenu was by them, time to check this out

software, Nazis.

@ND3JR Good question. There are other hotkey launchers, but I'm not aware of anything that's an exact replacement.

software, Nazis.

@gcupc @ND3JR honestly id be interested in a non-exact replacement. dmenu works but it does annoying shit like span the top of both of my monitors instead of the one its on and i guess because nazis dont want to write too much code bcause its ~hard~ there is, as far as i can tell, no way to get it to not do that

software, Nazis.

@anna @gcupc I've switched to rofi. can be used as a drop-in dmenu replacement, but I've found that it's own run dialog works just fine. It pops up in the center of the screen and shows your most-frequenly-used commands near the top. Pressing shift+enter tells rofi to execute the command in a terminal.

software, Nazis.

@ND3JR @gcupc this sounds like that awesomebar thing or whatever which is honestly more what i actually wanted anyway

software, Nazis.

@ND3JR @gcupc update: i installed it and holy hell this is way better than dmenu

not surprised at all switching off nazi software to something else has benefits!!

software, Nazis.

@gcupc damn, I liked dmenu and surf

shitpost re: software, Nazis.

@gcupc maybe suckless should work on sucking less, not more

software, Nazis.

@gcupc dammit. i actually do like a few of their software projects. that sucks.

re: software, Nazis.

@gcupc Oh hell! I liked their software despite the developers being insufferable elitists ><

re: software, Nazis.

@lexi IDK why this hit my timeline *now*
@gcupc

re: software, Nazis.

@ckeen @gcupc I'm not familiar with this project, but that photo taken in that month of 2017 pretty much is self-incriminating

re: software, Nazis.

@bob

They wrote a bunch of useful software, namely dwm, st, slock and some others.

@gcupc

re: software, Nazis.

@ckeen @gcupc I should probably also do some independent research to check that I'm not supporting projects like this. Obviously not everyone who goes under the banner of Free Software is great.

re: software, Nazis.

@bob @gcupc

TBF I think a nightwalk in the woods with torches used to be a nice outdoor activity in my youth time. But the whole picture and the lack of a political stance makes this more than suspicious.

re: software, Nazis.

@ckeen @gcupc At other times it might be something innocent, but in that month of 2017 it had a particular political meaning.

re: software, Nazis.

@bob

Yes, I am not defending this in any way.

@gcupc

software, Nazis.

@gcupc
Context for anyone who doesn't know what "Wolfsschanze" is a reference to: It was the name of Adolf Hitler's military HQ on the Eastern Front: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf%2

software, Nazis.

@gcupc well now im even happier to use i3 which partially is a response to suckless' wm being dumb as hell, though hopefully i3 doesn't have its own crop of shitheads lol
