…this is weird, but I've suddenly realized that I'd find MMA competitions infinitely more tolerable if there was a moment after, where you had the two fighters, sharing a beer or a beverage of their choice, and just happily chatting about what they liked about the fight and what they'd like to see more from their opponents in future, complimenting their opponents on their moves and skills.

Like, that'd completely change the nature of MMA culture, but I'd watch that. So much.

“Dude, you gotta tell me how you managed that core control with your grapple. That's not something I thought was possible with someone of your build.”

“Okay, well… I know this sounds wild, but there's this yoga teacher near where I train that I go to every other day. She's really good at bringing up that core control.”

“Oh my god! Really? I gotta try this. Can I have her business' number?”

“Sure bro, I've got her card right here…”

I'D WATCH IT, I'D WATCH IT, I'D WATCH IT

Like, I detested wrestling as a teenager, because it was violent, full of racist machismo, and people kept saying it was fake.

Then I realized that yes, it was fake, but so egregiously fake like theatre, that the people who were behind it could be vulnerable, felt sorrow, stood by one another like a family (this was when Owen Hart died).

Like, the labor issues in WWE are still something of a problem, and its implicit racism… but I respect it WAY more now, and enjoy it more than I did as a teen

Like the one thing that turned me around from LOATHING Paul Bearer to absolutely LOVING him was the fact that he came up on TV during RAW IS OWEN, dressed in a cream-colored polo-shirt, wearing tinted glasses, and looking tired, devastated and sad that one of his friends had died… that was deeply affecting to me. This was a man who PUT HIS HEART AND SOUL for people to hate him.

Oh no.

Paul Bearer died in 2013.

Oh no.

I need to get back into wrestling fandom.

@tariqk the Internet has enriched wrestling fandom with exposure to promotions outside the WWE. Things like NJPW and Lucha Underground have carved out their own niches and it's awesome.

@geektox this sounds amazing and i want in

where do i start

@tariqk the first two seasons of Lucha Underground is on Netflix (in Canada, at least) and NJPW has their own subscription service njpwworld.com/about?waad=BGmNt that's like their version of the WWE Network, which is also great because you get access to NXT, 205 Live, all the PPVs since the very beginning of WWE, WCW and ECW

@geektox worth looking at! I don't know if I can afford any of this shit yet, but I'll keep an eye out.
