We don't really know how some modern AI and AI-adjacent technologies like Deep Learning work. We only know that it works, but we don't know why. Engineering is using things that science has not explained yet.

It's difficult to audit something you don't know what it's actually doing. You can monitor the inputs and outputs, but you can never predict what's actually going on.

Such is the state of affairs today. It's worse than malice, it's that we just don't really know

Then, the entire existence of human civilisation has forever depended on our use of gravity for things like building aqueducts and machines, and lifts.

Likewise, we know how gravity behaves and we can predict how things will work quite accurately, but we don't really know what it is or why it works.

Same thing with Deep Learning.

Notice the difference between knowledge of *how* a thing works and can be utilised, *why* it works, and *what* it is.
Three different questions.

Engineering is concerned with the *hows*, but the *whys* and the *whats* are the domain of science, and in the case of AI science, for many modern technologies we're not quite there yet.

Anticapitalist Mastodon instance. Party means fun, not political party. But we're still political.
