A really great episode of the Current Affairs podcast - especially in the first segment where they talk about confronting conservative and right-wing arguments&ideals and why leftists (and especially liberals) often fail at this or leave much to be desired.

there is a line, of course. if a work is pretty much "facism is good!" that is not good.......... but most works of fiction are not saying that, especially not with antagonists or "evil" or "dark" characters. and liking characters that have shitty ideologies does not equal supporting those ideas.

controversial? toot of the day is i really can't stand hot takes about fiction in any form of media that is all about morality politics like "this character is evil you can't like them" or even "the creator of that is x, y, and z so you shouldn't like their work" like
i'm a big believer of fiction DOES NOT really affect reality and people are more than capable of separate fiction from reality and people shouldn't try to blame ppl being shitty on a work of fiction

I am really just ASTOUNDED and the AUDACITY of this guy like

he frames it likes HE’S the victim, the “minority” here whose values are in jeopardy and he’s being oppressed

let’s just forget about the fact that if we followed his “conscientious views” we’d be denying women and LGBTQ peeps incredibly important physical and mental health information 🙃

tomorrow there’s a conference for the admins of foreign English teachers and we had to fill out a informational sheet about how we run things in our prefecture and my partner admin (the one who tried to get info about contraceptives, abortion, and LGBTQ life in japan removed from an info packet) wrote this under the “issues and concerns” section

he’s American and cited religious views as why he didn’t want this info included previously
