When threats become common place, daily occurrences, we can't turn off our antennae. We can't say, "Today, I am not going to scan for threats." So instead of the usual scanning that reveals little to nothing, now every day we're being bombarded with legitimate threats. Eventually, traumatized people collapse in exhaustion, flashbacks, panic attacks, and/or total disassociation, all of which make it impossible to fight.
